black box:
A black box is any device whose workings are not understood by or accessible to its user. According to Edward Tenner, writing in the The Washington Post, the first black box was a gun sight carried on World War II Flying Fortresses, with hidden components that corrected for environmental variables, such as wind speed. The crew probably didn't know how the device worked, but they knew it might be crucial to their survival. (source: http://searchsoftwarequality.techtarget.com/definition/black-box)
Let's see…"workings are not understood by the user" and "didn't know how the device worked, but they knew it might be crucial to their survival"! If that doesn't describe insurance, I'm not sure what does!
Whether it's property and casualty insurance or employee benefits for a business or organization, or home, auto or life insurance for an individual, buying insurance is complicated. There is no such thing as a perfect insurance policy – one that covers all your needs and your exposures - and if there was one, no one could afford it. So understanding the trade-offs you’re making every time you buy insurance requires a peek inside the black box, with someone who knows what’s inside.
